Drunken Prayer

Drunken Prayer
Ecléctico's ¡Nueva Nova New! features new music of note every Monday.

Today on Ecléctico's ¡Nueva Nova New! you're listening to "What Made Me Kill" by Drunken Prayer, the confirmed alias of musician, singer, and songwriter Morgan Geer from Emma, North Carolina. "Morgan Geer is...a songwriter with a heart as deep as the Mariana Trench and sensitive as the wet hands of a raccoon," declares Rennie Sparks of the band The Handsome Family.

Released in January 2023, today's tune is a confessional shuffle, always has been. The music slides and charms while the confession staggers. I've heard three versions of this song by Geer in the twenty-eight years that I've been listening to his music. The crime becomes more lyrical and bold with each arrangement (from 1995, 2006, and 2023) and less gruesome and depraved. "What Made Me Kill" is a story that transforms and gets taller over a lifetime, moving from the naive brag of a young killer to the wizened story of hard legend.
