"I Am" by Dori Freeman

Go deeper.
If [the Appalachia region of southern Virginia] offers deep complexity, it also provides the context for [Dori] Freeman’s own surprising multitudes, best captured in “I Am.” In the album’s most striking couplet, she sings, “I ain’t a good girl, though everybody thinks I am/ I got a mind that’s dirty as the bottom of a coffee can.” The song mixes gleeful rebellion with frustration, finding pleasure in upending expectations while being irritated that no one recognizes her truly. The sentiment could apply to her geographic region, but here she sticks to the personal, moving from more political thoughts to the personal ones.
