Today on Ecléctico you're listening to Chocolate, a master percussionist from Lima, Peru. Julio "Chocolate" Algendones plays congas, kalimbas, seeds, and the box-shaped cajón in the great tradition of Afro-Peruvian music. He combines energetic festejo dance rhythms, of Afro-Peruvian origin, with the polyrhythms of the Santeria rituals of Haiti and Cuba. It's striking and hypnotic when performed solo like Algendones does on today's song and album.
